Description: Dare to Revitalize Education thru Arts & Mediation, DREAM!, dares to revitalize education thru media arts, mediation and restorative practice. We arm young people with practical skills to dismantle the school to prison pipeline, support student engagement with learning and academic success, and encourage the creative confidence of young leaders.
Our training facilitators are professional media artists/mediators who came up through Bronx and Harlem schools; they train teachers in the classroom use of restorative practice and young people to become peer-mediators and school leaders. They use the power of theater, fashion, media arts and music to promote “talking it out” rather than fighting.
Trainings with DREAM!/Safety with Dignity help students and teachers grow their schools into communities where people value diversity, live and work together with respect, and have skills to resolve conflict without violence.
The DREAM! Teaching Artist works closely with the Program Manager & under their supervision, has direct responsibility for developing and implementing lesson plans that are collaborative, goal oriented and project based. We're looking for creative, seasoned & passionate PT-Filmmaker & Fashion-Teaching Artists, for a minimum yearlong commitment, to engage with adolescents in the Bronx. Teaching Artists with diverse digital media expertise, interests and the ability to command the attention and respect of our students restoratively are encouraged to apply!
The DREAM! Teaching Artist must be well organized but flexible, a self-starter who can take minimal direction and run with assignments, organize time and meet deadlines with minimal oversight. The applicant should have experience and/or an interest in learning more about restorative practice, mediation, and our youth centered approach.
In collaboration with both their colleague Teaching Artists and the Program Manager, the T.A. is responsible for the following:
To create and facilitate age appropriate media arts & literacy lesson plans for an approxiamate 20 week program in alignment with program goals
Track participant progress and program effectiveness through evaluations and one-on-ones with participants
Communicate and follow-up regularly with the Program Manager via email, Facetime, text messaging tools etc.
Demonstrate effective classroom management skills and the ability to maintain a structured, positive learning environment
Attend bi-weekly 1.5 hour team meetings and participate in training and staff development activities
Participate in student showcase events
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements of DREAM! Teaching Artist:
BA in Arts and/or Education, BFA or related training preferred
Proficiency in all aspects of filmmaking- pre-production, production and post-production process
A minimum of 2 years experience working with youth, teaching, and curriculum development aligned with NYC Blueprint for Learning & Teaching in the Arts (youth centered, project based learning)
Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to work as part of a team are necessary
